ISC2004 KEYNOTE PRESENTATION:
The Search for the Softron - Will we be able to develop software for Petaflop/s Computing?
|
Abstract:
Hardware performance increases with no end in sight. New technologies, consistent and aligned with Moore's Law provide both the commercial and scientific basis for this view. However, software and application development has not been so fortunate. There seems to be no fundamental, underlying physics or other guiding principles.
We did speak of the Y2K problem, however for Petaflop/s computing, we will experience the C2K problem (where 'c' is the speed of light).
This talk will attempt to derive some of the guiding principles for Petaflop Software development. We will use existing software 'Gedanken -Experiment' to derive some existing principles. We will then embark on the search for the elusive 'Softron. This search will ultimately lead to new principles of development as well as the appropriate models for programming Petaflop/s computing systems.
